      Content: Approach to Photography The core of my photographic work is the natural world. As a naturalist, I endeavor to create images that show nature as a dynamic interrelated system rather than merely as a collection of disconnected plants and animals or scenic views. Thus, there are photos of caspian terns flying closely over white-capped waves in search of fish, a mute swan tending a nest in the reeds on the shore of a small lake, or a patch of lupine growing among other vegetation in a black oak savanna. There are also landscape and habitat photos that endeavor to show the various layers or components of an ecological community, forming a working segment of nature. Nevertheless, I do also enjoy making close-ups or "portraits" of plants and animals showing the details of the individual organisms. Of course, this is photography, so an equally important objective is to create images that are artistic and aesthetically pleasing. I believe that the best nature photographs are ones that combine in a high degree both of these fundamental objectives. Fortunately, nature is inherently beautiful, so combining these two aspects in a single photo is often a very natural result. To me, part of the aesthetics of a successful nature photograph is a combination of a natural history story along with natural patterns, subtle (or sometimes not so subtle) gradations of color and textures, contrast and lighting, all in such a way as to give the sense of actually standing in and experiencing the natural surroundings. Background I was trained as a botanist, earning a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, and have conducted research in tropical botany for several years at the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Field Museum of Natural History. Subsequently, I went to law school at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, and now I practice nonprofit organization law at a large Chicago law firm. As a botanist, I explored (and continue to explore) numerous areas of the United States, including the Upper Great Lakes region, the Southeast -- especially, the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida -- Nebraska, Colorado, California, and Oregon. In the American tropics, I have explored for plants in southeastern Mexico, especially in the state of Chiapas, as well as in Costa Rica, and Panama. My professional botanical work involved primarily systematic study of the large tropical plant family, the Euphorbiaceae (which includes the Christmas poinsettia, the Para rubber tree -- the original source of commercial rubber -- croton, crown-of-thorns, tapioca, and many others). I also served on the editorial board of the Flora Mesoamericana project, a multi-institutional effort to compile an account of all the species of higher plants in the region from southern Mexico to the Panama-Colombia border. I have discovered over 25 new species of tropical plants and given them scientific names.
